Stress and the High School Student

A new documentary, "Race to Nowhere," looks at the pressures being put on high school students to build their résumés with Advance Placement classes and athletic accomplishments to improve their chances of acceptance at elite colleges and universities.
The film captures the angst of boys who drop out of high school because of the pressure, girls who suffer stress-induced insomnia and students forced to cheat their way through classes.
The film is hitting a nerve among parents across the country who are worried about the levels of stress that their children are experiencing, beginning even in elementary school. What can schools -- and parents -- do to turn down the heat?

heat = em geral significa calor, aquecimento, temperatura elevada. Mas no caso da reportagem Heat está como gíria (slang = sl) e aqui seguem dois usos:

1) abreviação de High Explosive Anti Tank = heat, this term is commonly used to describe a weapon of some kind, usually a pistol. "Are you packing heat?
Este termo é comumente usado para descrever arma de algum tipo, normalmente pistola. "Você está carregando/ Você possui uma arma ?"

2) Este é o heat do texto = psychological pressure on a person or group, especially to produce or achieve something · "We're beginning to feel the heat as the deadline gets closer and closer".
Pressão psicológica em alguém ou algum grupo, especialmente para produzir ou realizar/alcançar algo.
"Estamos começando a sentir a pressão conforme os prazos chegam cada vez mais perto".
